In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the seamless integration of user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design has become the cornerstone of crafting compelling and user-centric products. During the semester, I had the privilege of immersing myself in NUS Product Club’s Figma workshop. Under the guidance of instructor Darice and facilitators Ani and Jing Xuan, I gained invaluable insights into UI/UX principles and honed my skills in Figma design. Here's a reflection on the key takeaways from this enriching workshop!
Darice, sharing the difference between UI/UX design!
The workshop commenced with a fundamental exploration of the distinction between UI and UX design, drawing insights from industry leaders such as the Nielsen Norman Group and CareerFoundry. While UI design encompasses the visual elements of a product, including typography, colors, and animations, UX design extends beyond aesthetics to encompass the entire user journey, from start to finish. It became evident that both UI and UX are essential components of delivering a seamless and intuitive user experience.

Navigating Figma during the workshop was like embarking on an intriguing journey into the world of design. As I delved into its features, I discovered a wealth of tools that reshaped my approach to creating digital interfaces.
Exploring Figma's main navigation bar felt like uncovering a treasure trove of design functionalities. Learning the shortcuts, such as 'V' for the Move tool and 'F' for frames, simplified the process of manipulating elements within my designs. It was a practical experience that made me feel more confident in navigating the platform.
Understanding layer structures was pivotal in organizing my designs effectively. By grasping how frames, text, shapes, and icons interacted within the layer hierarchy, I gained insight into maintaining clarity and order in my projects. It provided a solid foundation for building cohesive designs.
The design panels within Figma offered a range of tools and options that empowered me to refine my designs with precision. From aligning elements to applying subtle effects, each feature contributed to enhancing the visual appeal of my interfaces. It was a practical exploration that deepened my understanding of design principles.

Creating components within Figma presented a valuable opportunity to streamline my design process. While it posed a challenge initially, mastering the creation of reusable elements like buttons and navigation bars revolutionized my workflow. It was a practical skill that enhanced the consistency and efficiency of my designs.
Prototyping in Figma was a highlight of the workshop, allowing me to bring my designs to life with seamless interactions. By linking frames and defining interactions, I could visualize how users would navigate through my interfaces. It was a hands-on experience that reinforced the importance of user-centric design.
As the workshop progressed, I grew more confident in harnessing Figma's toolkit. Each skill I acquired expanded my capabilities as a designer, empowering me to bring my creative ideas to fruition. Each new skill I acquired opened up new possibilities for my design projects, and I left the workshop feeling inspired and ready to apply my newfound knowledge to future endeavors.
Throughout the workshop, emphasis was placed on adhering to design best practices to ensure usability and accessibility. From utilizing auto layout and alignment tools to maintaining consistency with layout grids and 8-point grids, I gained insights into the importance of creating cohesive and user-friendly designs. Additionally, the workshop highlighted the significance of usability testing and iterative design processes in refining and optimizing user experiences.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the workshop was the spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing that permeated every activity. Working alongside fellow participants, I was inspired by the diversity of perspectives and collective creativity that fueled innovation. Moreover, the workshop instilled in me a sense of curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning, with a plethora of additional resources provided to further expand my knowledge in the field of UI/UX design.
In conclusion, the Figma workshop has been an eye-opening experience, offering me valuable insights into the world of UI/UX design. It's not just about mastering a tool; it's about understanding how to craft experiences that resonate with users. Through practical exercises and hands-on learning, I've gained confidence in my ability to create interfaces that are not only visually appealing but also intuitive and user-friendly. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned and the inspiration gained from this workshop, knowing that they will shape my approach to problem-solving and innovation in whatever path I choose to pursue.
Despite her lack of exposure to product management, Izzati’s experiences in her Innovation and Design (iDP) minor had inspired her to join our club to learn more about PM as a whole. As an all-rounder who juggles her time as both a sportswoman in NUS Silat and as a major in Data Science & Analytics, she has leveraged her past experiences in NUS Muslim Society to assist in our Publicity Team’s content creation plans for our first semester. Moving forward, she will be in charge of producing blog articles for our new club website, ensuring constant engagement with our followers to learn more about product topics.
